Friday/Saturday 14/15 June 2013 – Pierowall to Scalloway

The wind was much lighter and weather fine – just the day for a crossing to Shetland.  However we did not want to arrive late, so opted to go overnight.  By the time we left there was hardly any wind!  After motoring out of the bay we were able to sail slowly, then motored for half an hour to make sure the tide did not take us back into Bore Rost (Rost is the local name for overfalls).  We then started to sail well on a close reach, putting in a reef at 2300.  It never got properly dark and we went much of the way at 6 – 7 knots, so much better than being hard on the wind.  Approaching Scalloway we ran into poor visibility (about 1/2 mile) and carefully followed our waypoints and then the buoys to the visitors’ pontoon at Scalloway Boat Club.  We were grateful for other boat owners helping with the lines as it’s never clear if there is enough space or depth at a strange pontoon very near the shore.

After breakfast and a snooze we found the other boats had gone.  In the afternoon we visited the museum, which had a lot of information on the “Shetland Bus”.  In the evening the club had a band playing when we visited for a brief drink (mistake!).  The club seems to major on drinking and golf tournaments – we did not see any notices about boating activities.
